Like a lot of us bookish people I find myself particularly partial to a pretty book - and a sprayed edge. I don't have huge numbers with sprayed edges, I don't receive a regular book box at the moment (although I have in the past) so I've got some from those and some lucky finds of things like Waterstones special editions.
Recently my lovely sister gifted me the Fairyloot editions of Fourth Wing and Iron Flame and I was looking at how best to display them.
Despite loving sprayed edges I don't usually display them face out but decided that for these I wanted to. This prompted me to look at some of my others to see what I could put with them. While I was pulling older books off my shelf I was very surprised to see how badly the top edge of some of my others had faded.
Blue's fading to a sort of green colour, black to grey and orange just fading away seemed to be the worst culprits. My bookcases aren't in direct sun but obviously even day to day light has been enough to effect them over time. What's odd is not all books are equal - some have held up much better than others.
While this absolutely won't stop me from buying pretty books in future it will make me pause if the edition is significantly more expensive than a standard one.
