I loved this book as it is about a topic that I am most perplexed about, and that is change. We all know that change is inevitable. But do we accept that reality? I know I don't. And this is especially the case as I age.
There are three themes to Dr. Zebian's book. They are:
Accept change before it makes you reject your reality.
Choose change before it chooses you.
Embrace change so it can lead you to your authentic life.
Accepting change is hard. Who wants to do things differently and feel differently about everything from our relationships, to our interests and much more. Not too many of us do, even the most self-actualized.
Instead, we want things to be the exact same. But that's impossible. Even our skin and looks change regularly. Do we stop long enough to notice? Probably not. I know I don't. it's far easier to just keep on going and hoping that change won't really happen.
But alas it does happen. As a matter of fact, we're not even the same person we were this morning. I know. I'm freaking you own right now. Well, believe it or not, I'm also freaking myself out.
Why? I don't want this to be the case. But it really is. I am not the same person I was even a moment ago. My blood flowed differently, my heart rate is different, and even my mood shifted. So that should be proof enough, right?
Whether it's your job, relationships, or just the way you move through the world, if you're like most people you have something in your life you'd like to change. And sometimes unwanted change comes all too swiftly: a breakup, a death, an upheaval to everyday reality you thought you could rely on.
Dr. Zebian guides you through the changes we must make and those we must endure on the journey to our most authentic lives. Authenticity can take place. But it will take time to achieve it. But a life without authenticity is like living someone else's life. It's not a life worth living.
