It's the dream of many a writer: exploring the world, creating stories from anywhere.
And most importantly, making money while doing it.
Imagine pondering your next plot twist while watching the sun come up from behind the Eiffel tower.
Or slurping noodles at a night market in Asia while dreaming up a new character you know will delight your readers.
Or enjoying a light lunch at a restaurant overlooking the beach in Hawaii while the words flow from your fingertips.
No wonder it's the dream.
Now, I don't mean to make it sound like it's all fun and games—writing books is still work!
But let's be real: it's enjoyable work, and hanging out in a far-flung spot on the globe only adds to the appeal.
Many indie authors make their livings this way. They write full-time, self-publish their books on Amazon, and collect royalties.
(The royalties from self-publishing, by the way, are considerably higher than having a contract with a publishing house.)
So how do you make this dream life happen? There are 3 steps.
Step 1
The first step is to realize that you're in control of where you want to go in life, and once you make the conscious decision to leave the life of the ordinary, you'll feel empowered.
It's a mindset shift from "Someday, I would love to travel while making a living" to "Hold up, I actually CAN do this."
Take action now: think about where you would like to go. Live abroad? Explore your home country or state? Search the web for more information about the places you think of.
Step 2
The next step is to come up with a plan. Do you have enough in savings, or do you need to find a job to support yourself while you build your novel-writing empire? This could be working a job in the new location or taking another job with you remotely. Remote writing jobs abound, by the way. If you decide to go abroad, what are the requirements to enter the country, or establish residency there? If you have a family, would it work better to take shorter, more frequent trips from your home base?
Step 3
Then, it's time to put the plan into action, knowing your writing career is about to get a huge boost. As you write, you may even find your stories take on the flavor of the places you visit, live in, and work in, adding an extra zip and tang to your stories that make them irresistible.
As a novelist, your body of work won't appear overnight. But give it some time, and as you write one novel after another, your fan base will grow and you'll sell more and more books.
And ... as a side benefit, each book you write will be better than the last.
So ... no excuses! Get started writing your novel today. Do you have an idea for a story? Turn that idea into words on the page. Here's a great way to do it: join us for the 21-Day Novel Writing Jumpstart, where you'll learn, step by step, how to knock out your first chapter in just a few weeks.
"It doesn't hurt to dream" is a piece of life advice you hear a lot. But it does hurt to only dream, because it does require plenty of action to back it up.
Are you ready? Let's get to it.
Before long, you'll feel like you're living in a postcard.
