Since his young days growing up on the Caribbean island of Tobago, Caleb Hart has been a performer. With a passion for utilizing music to promote positive energy, he blends reggae, calypso and folk for a sound he has dubbed "island soul".
While using music to spread love and good vibes, his music is far from simplistic. Recent single "Good Life" carries far more complexities than you would initially expect, as co-writer Buckman Coe explains:
"When Caleb and I started writing verses however, the connotation of the Good Life took a more sardonic twist. The song became about the same systems that keep us locked in war, social strife, patriotism, religion, climate chaos, all while selling us the Good Life and threatening to take it away when we dissent. This is a battle for survival. It's the struggle for Justice."
The song is true, old school reggae with dub elements with lyrics you wouldn't expect like "Complexities, fixation on the premise of superiority". The history of reggae as protest music lives on in Hart's music. There's also a heavy hip hop influence, with songs like "Count Your Blessings" delivering lines in a swift rapper's flow, with a soulful hook thrown in for good measure.
"Pelau" has a lighter touch, with a piano melody and steel drums creating a dreamier atmosphere over a reggaeton rhythm. And if you want a club jam, Hart has it with "Hustle & Bustle", with its meatier percussion and tongue-twisting flow.
