First off I know I missed last month's blog post. Sorry about that life got in the way, and now it's practically mid-june. But I do have a lot of updates (writing projects new, forgotten and with a renewed perspective).
Music favorites: The past month I have been going back and listening to my playlists that I've made on spotify for my WIPs. So not a lot of new music discoveries. Masterpiece by Motionless In White has been a favorite. As well as the music from Divine Grave, his has an ep called traumapieces you should check it out if you are a fan of sleep token. He also released an instrumental version of the Ep as well.
Fiction favorites: Testaments by Margaret Atwood, sequel to handmaid's tale. i haven't finished it but i'm 1/2 through it. **slight spoilers:** It explores Aunt Lydia's pov as a high ranking aunt in the society of Gilead, Agnes a girl that lives in gilead, and Daisy a girl that lives in Canada. its a good dystopian book if you like that type of thing, (personally i blame school for making us read all the dystopian books and now i actually kinda like reading them)
Another book I've read over the last month, I remember mentioning that I would read this in the future, but Her Soul To Take by Harley Laroux. Explores a dark romance between Rae and a demonic entity, read the trigger warnings before reading the book. But definitely going to check out the rest of the trilogy when I get a handle on balancing reading & writing once again.
Another book I've partially read is The Writing Retreat by Juilia Bartz. It's about a young woman, Alex, who won a contest to join other writers to a month-long retreat at the estate of writer Roza Vallo. But she doesn't know that her ex-friend Wren also submitted a piece and is also attending the retreat. And they don't realize until they meet Roza Vallo that she's assigned them to complete an entirely new novel during the month stay. But as they stay longer at the retreat, Alex notices odd things happening around the estate, and one of the contestants goes missing. Now, I don't normally read thrillers but this has been a fun read, and yes you can read this at night I've done it) . I can't wait to see what happens in the second 1/2 of the book!
Non-fiction books: By The Seat Of Your Pants, Secrets To Discovery Writing by Kimboo York. Basically a book about pantsing (aka writing without an outline) and it includes exercises to try. Something that I heard about through one of my writing podcasts that I listen to where the podcast host was interviewing her and I liked Kimboo York's view on discovery writing and how some people just aren't built to outline at all. (aka me kind of XD)
writing update: if you don't follow me on social media, you really should thats where you get the most up to date and in time updates when it comes to writing (aka the chaos that consumes my life at all times). Over the past month or more I've been kind of outlining. Now not going huge cork boards with post-it notes or anything. more so making character outlines of their wants and needs in a way to flesh out character motivations that I can use through the WIP i'm working on.
SPEAKING of WIP, there's been an update on that front. Still working on my dark romance wip, A Deal With A Demon while i'm not working on fanfiction updates for my wattpad readers. I've also rediscovered (I think through a damn writing podcast as well) my old forgotten project Scattered Ashes and I came to the realization of why all the previous drafts didn't work. I thought writing a fantasy-romance was too much to handle. Bit it wasn't it at all. Nope. Multi-pov. That is what was missing [insert volcano emoji head here, cause my mind was BLOWN y'all when my brain thought of that]. I have also come back to another project that I have been working on in the last month when i'm not working on everything else, my novella project for my side character trouple situation for my debut novel series, learning to love again. I'm going to try and work on that during July to see if I can do some fast drafting to get a preorder up maybe in the fall?
700k update: 37,403/700,000 words written this year (yes this went up dramatically because I've also decided to count my morning pages that I do in the morning because I think journaling while more personal should count).
another update, random one: I've relaunched my youtube channel (kinda). I want to do weekly uploads/posts but I don't have that many ideas that are rattling around in my brain to come up with weekly post ideas. But I have been posting. I posted back during camp nanowrimo (for like one week straight, plan was to do it every week but I had some family drama come up that prevented me mentally from wanting to film that process). then there was the two monthly makeup videos that I've posted since (a way of sharing products that i've used up over the course of a month) for april and may and the plan is to also do like a summer makeup use it up challenge where i show the products i'll be exclusively using during the summer to get them all done or close to it (and there is a lot of cream products that I have so i'll have no problem using them up at all)
Future sale: At the start of July Smashwords always has a sale for books. I'll be putting mine up for sale for anyone that is interested in purchasing them at a lower price point, I'll be sure to share the link at the start of July next month ;).
future plans: i have thought about moving my WIP from patreon and exclusively sharing my draft of projects onto Ream, which is a platform that is built specifically for authors to share their works. Wherever I make that journey (because I think I'm going to want to have some content already completed to schedule out for that) and I'll be keeping the patreon strictly exclusive for the fanfiction updates sooner than on my wattpad.
those are the updates for now,
xoxo,
Jessica Danielle ❤
