Julien Neaves, Caribbean Head Writer
Plot: Two young gangsters go out on a hit, but their target is much more than they bargained for.
Review: In Sommer's recent review of Jessica Alba-starring and middling Netflix action thriller Trigger Warning she mentioned the "army of one" action subgenre. These were super popular in the 80s and some of the best modern examples would be The Transporter films and the John Wick franchise. And we may have seen the birth of a new army-of-one action star with Trinidad and Tobago action short film 3 Points from Ten Global Media.
This is gonna leave a mark
The short starts off like the regular Caribbean gangster flick which there has been a few of both locally and elsewhere in the region. But the action kicks off (both literally and figuratively) when we are introduced to ex-military enforcer Kaiman played by Keegan Taylor, who also served as writer, producer, VFX, fight choreography, camera operator and so forth. As a martial artist, Taylor has the physicality and the skills to pull off an action hero. The fight sequence is brief but fast paced, visceral and quite entertaining.
3 Points also gets points (what? I like puns) for some catchy music, stylish visuals and a production polish which does take it above most other local shorts. My only complaint would be that it is a bit too short (it's about under seven minutes not counting credits) and more time could have been spent on the action than the less interesting young gangster story.
Yes. Yes sir. I got it. Two-piece spicy, breast and wing, cole slaw and a red flavour soft drink
That said, if the intention was the whet audience's appetite for more then consider mine whetted. I definitely want to see more of Kaiman kicking backside in a longer feature (prequel, sequel, does not really matter) as this could be the start of a beautiful army-of-one action franchise.
