A band that challenges itself to do something different is almost always a fascinating sight even if it ends in a failure. It allows us to see visages that may not have been attempted elsewhere with those that succeed effortlessly finding themselves considered amongst the more celebrated acts of whatever given sound they reside in. When you combine that with an act who seeks to bend the lines of the genres themselves, it can certainly make for a sight that demands to be seen for all that it is and can be. With its second full-length album, Ape Vermin demonstrates just such a phenomenon in exquisite detail.
Dealing in a work such as this, it demands to be made clear that there are a lot of elements going into any given work that dares to blur the boundaries between genres to deliver a performance that can be considered eclectic and engaging but still organic in nature with the different influences often vying for dominance whether that's a conscious choice by the band or not. Only in the best of scenarios do we get a work like what Ape Vermin has summoned forth with the ten tracks of "Andromedas Colossus" that makes for a truly bombastic hour-long pummeling. An intelligent blend that uses sludge metal as an undeniable base while incorporating several pieces of doom, heavy metal, and even thrash with a potent progressive edge, "Andromedas Colossus" knows precisely how to set itself apart from the competition and shine intensely bright. Capable of navigating the different nuances of each given style while always making sure to give each style its due respect and time in the limelight, it becomes evident by the end of just the first few tracks that Ape Vermin was not content at putting forth a work that easily slides into the confines of any one or even two genres. The strength and ferocity of Ape Vermin is on constant display with the riffs, the atmospheres, and the sheer menace that is perpetuates throughout every given track is something that one simply cannot deny so long as the crushing weight of Ape Vermin is allowed to persist with "Andromedas Colossus" arguably the perfect vessel for such.
Where many have sought to bring much to the table, Ape Vermin accomplishes that in spectacular fashion and seemingly without breaking a single sweat. Heavy and irrefutable in its ways of rhythm, "Andromedas Colossus" dared much with the spoils of its effort clear to any and all who lose themselves within this magnificent creation that can't be likened to much else throughout the scene.
