These old and tired Mountains watch weary workers labor and see through aged and baggy eyes weighed down with unwept tears stifled by resilience, pools of liquid in each person, hope damned with tired eyelids and stretched smile wrinkles.
They see smiled suffering, beneath the folds of fading forests.
So,
the Hills roll and age and pray
that misplaced pride in toil might one day birth more than blistered hands, that one day they might instead rest in wrinkled callus having forged a deep and plentiful ravine in those welcome valleys,
where every generation who abides these old and tired mountains might know more kindness than those before and endure.
Joshua Allen attends Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania pursuing a master's in education. He previously earned a bachelor's in English and a minor degree in creative writing from Mansfield University. Writing and poetry are his favorite pursued interests, but when not writing, he enjoys listening to music, hiking new trails, and playing games, especially role-playing games. If he could say one thing, he would encourage you to, "lead a good life."
