British audio specialist Cambridge has introduced its first over-ear headphones, the Melomania P100. The latest edition to its wireless headphones series, the new noise cancelling cans launch into a highly competitive market, but have plenty going for them.
Boasting premium drivers and hi-fi-grade amplification, the headphones offer a 60 hour battery life, which can be extended to 100 hours if you switch noise cancelling off - making them ideal travelling companions. Fast charging means that 5 minutes of wall time offers another 2 hours of ANC-enabled playback, or 4 hours without ANC.
Available in either black or white, they look stylish and are comfortable to wear. I had an early preview, and can attest to the softness of their earcups and the clarity of sound - full bodied but not excessively bass heavy.
The earcups have pads made from memory foam covered in faux leather. The clamping force is spot on.
The P100 follows the launch of the Cambridge M100 true wireless earphones.

Sustainable over-ear headphones with Gaming Mode and Voice Feedback by Matt Berry
Designed and engineered at Cambridge Audio's London base, they're built around a custom 40mm premium three-layer Mylar driver, with neodymium magnets matched with Class AB amplification comparable to Cambridge's highly rated CX Series amplifiers.
They feature Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound silicon with aptX Lossless wireless technology, which supports wireless playback in CD quality, without lossy compression. There's codec support for SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive up to 24-bit/96kHZ.
They also offer the choice of wired operation via USB-C to 3.5mm jack, or USB-C to USB-C, and support Multipoint connectivity.
Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) offers three user-selectable settings to give the best user experience.
The P100 are further customisable for individual listening. Out of the box, they're tuned to offer signatur Cambridge sound, cited as transparent and natural, but they come with a number of options to fine tune the sound.
Using the Melomania Connect control app, audio can be personalised using a seven-band EQ, and there are six presets tailored to different music genres.
A Gaming Mode ensures near-perfect screen/sound sync, and can be used to correct latency issues when watching video content, with an accuracy of 80ms.
You need another reason to buy? In-ear voice feedback is guest-voiced by actor and musician Matt Berry!
With an eye to sustainability, the headphones have been made with 50 per cent recycled plastic, and ship in recyclable plastic-free packaging. The P100's battery and earcup pads are also user-replaceable. Cambridge Audio is a Founding Donor of the eco-music charity EarthPercent, which was co-founded by legendary musician Brian Eno.
The Cambridge Audio Melomania P100 are priced at £229 (€279/$279) and are available here.
