I'm excited to welcome you today to my stop on the blog tour for stunning historical thriller The Betrayal of Thomas True by A.J. West. Thank you to Anne Cater and Orenda Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this beautifully written book.

About the book:

It is the year 1710, and Thomas True has arrived on old London Bridge with a dangerous secret. One night, lost amongst the squalor of London's hidden back streets, he finds himself drawn into the outrageous underworld of the molly houses.

Meanwhile, carpenter Gabriel Griffin struggles to hide his double life as Lotty, the molly's stoic guard. When a young man is found murdered, he realises there is a rat amongst them, betraying their secrets to a pair of murderous Justices.

Can Gabriel unmask the traitor before they hang? Can he save hapless Thomas from peril, and their own forbidden love?

Set amidst the buried streets of Georgian London, The Betrayal of Thomas True is a brutal and devastating thriller, where love must overcome evil, and the only true sin is betrayal…

My Review:

The Betrayal of Thomas True by A.J. West is an extraordinarily powerful historical thriller that took me completely by surprise with just how good it is.

It's London 1710 and Thomas True has arrived on old London Bridge, invited by his cousin to become an apprentice in her parents candle making business. But Thomas is hiding a dangerous secret, one that he isn't even fully aware of himself. So when he meets Jack Hawkins he allows himself to be drawn to Mrs Clap's, a molly house in the underbelly of the city, where he can finally begin to learn how to be who he really is.

Meanwhile, carpenter Gabriel Griffin is struggling to hide his double life as Lotty, the stoic guard on the door at Clap's, and all the guilt that goes along with it. But then a young molly is found murdered and he realises that there's a rat amongst them, betraying all of their secrets to two murderous Justices. But who is it? And can Gabriel unmask him before it's too late… for bot only himself but also for Thomas.

A.J. West's writing is sublime as he brings the squalor of Georgian London and the outrageous underworld of the molly houses vividly to life. Meticulously researched, the fun and vivacious mollies are authentic and so delightfully full of life. Homosexual men, forbidden to be out and proud, who like to dress in women's clothes and be free to embrace who they really are in the only place they know they are accepted: the hidden molly houses.

The molly houses and indeed the mollies themselves are a part of history I knew very little about and I found their stories fascinating, even as they broke my heart with everything they had to go through and the barbaric way in which they were treated.

Steeped in history, The Betrayal of Thomas True is a book that not only entertains but also offers a social commentary on the issues of the time. A.J. West's writing delves deep beneath the surface of these remarkable people, peeling back the layers as he tells a powerful and thought provoking tale that I know will stay with me forever. With a strong and varied cast of memorable characters, this is a book that has everything, weaving a moving tale of epic proportions that captivated me from beginning to end.

The Betrayal of Thomas True is one of those books that really does get under your skin, with characters who you can't help but fall in love with and don't want to say goodbye to as you turn the final page. I LOVED it and would go as far as to say it is one of the best books I've ever read!

Thomas and Gabriel are so well written that they became real to me, my heart aching for them as the sense of danger and intensity of their feelings for each other became almost unbearable. I was desperate to see how their story would end and felt bereft as I finally did have to say goodbye and leave them behind.

Brutal, devastating and completely unforgettable, The Betrayal of Thomas True by A.J. West is a stunning historical thriller that I can't recommend highly enough.
