Even if we were to take into account everything that death metal has accomplished since its inception decades ago, I think it's safe to say that even the most basic of approaches can be done right so long as it's given the proper treatment and attention to allow such a piece to reach its full potential. Many bands live and die by that rule with those able to overcome oftentimes the ones that can make a real splash in the vast underground that the genre has accrued over the years. Cemetery Filth has overcome that hurdle multiple times by now, but a full line-up shift is enough to fold a band altogether. Rising with a strong passion to keep going and with the might to match, Cemetery Filth only continues to be a need-to-know underground entity with its fresh EP.
It could take a band several years to overcome any sort of change in line-up with any sort of complications along the way, and understandably so. It's often been the reason that even the most talented of names eventually come to a close, but it's every so often that we see a name like Cemetery Filth persevere to become something arguably better than what was before. Already having made quite a reputation for itself, it's with a new set of musicians apart from the vocalist that "Senses of Detriment" marks a new chapter for Cemetery Filth, and what power it's already starting out with! The absolute definition of intoxicating with its technical twists and turns while the rot that surrounds the entirety of this piece is always on the offensive, looking to find a hole to enter your skull through so that you become its thrall quickly, horrifically, and wholly. This is death metal whose hooks are weighty, well-bloodied, and infused with the hundreds of souls that they've harvested overtime with Cemetery Filth the perfect vessel for such madness to be delivered in practically every given moment as the formidable songwriting is pairing brilliantly with a masterful understanding of the terror at hand. It has been four years since we last heard from Cemetery Filth, yet it's with each second within "Senses of Detriment" that the band's future could not be any more pointed in an undeniably upward direction should they simply continue with the momentum that this monstrous EP will surely provide.
Five tracks is not always a lot, but Cemetery Filth has made it worth a true treasure trove! This is festering death metal that holds nothing back, is never afraid to really get its hands dirty, and knows precisely how to make sure that it's craft is executed to the fullest extent even if it is unspeakably brutal. I can only hope that it's not another four years before we hear a follow-up to "Senses of Detriment", yet I can't help but ask them to take their time. After all, if you're hoping to match or exceed the menace this EP brings to the table, then you're going to have to be surgical in your precision.
