It happened at McLarsen's swimming hole. They held him under, slowly letting go Until his body floated on its own, Riding the rapids to a point unknown. He hadn't wanted to come in, you know, Always afraid of rats and moccasins, Of bruising his shins on hidden rocks and limbs, Of anyone who might make fun of him.
The boys returned to their activities. Their favorite one is climbing to a shelf Close to the rock wall's summit, and then crashing, With screams, into the rushing creek below. Why did they drown him, you might want to know? Because he watched them. Because their shoves and shocks Had no more power than water over rock. Because he craved them. Because they could not change him.
