One for the History Books: President Donald Trump Defiant, Photo by Evan Vucci
After the appalling assassination attempt on President Donald Trump on June 13, photos and videos from the event began flooding the internet. But one in particular stood out not just for its electrifying imagery, but also for the power of its artistic composition. It was taken by Associated Press Chief Photographer Evan Vucci.
On X, YouTube thumbnail designer David Altizer posted analysis of the compositional elements which make the picture so effective. He used a few artistic terms in his description:
Rule of Thirds -The guideline proposes that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections. Aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject. (Wikipedia)
Negative Space - In art and design, negative space is the empty space around and between the subject(s) of an image. Negative space may be most evident when the space around a subject, not the subject itself, forms an interesting or artistically relevant shape, and such space occasionally is used to artistic effect as the "real" subject of an image. Contrast - Contrast in art is all about creating major visual differences between multiple elements. It is achieved by bringing opposite components together and drawing the audience's attention to their variation. (Adobe.com)
Balance - In visual design— whether it's illustration, graphic design, photography — balance is one way forms and space relate to each other. It deals with the positioning and proportion of elements in a design as they relate to each other and also to the entire design space. Balance is an innate, fundamental human expectation.
