Julian Onderdonk "A Field of Bluebonnets, San Antonio, 1921"
Ever since elitist mismanagement made the visual arts irrelevant to our culture, one of the few times art gets any attention is when an old family heirloom pays off like some kind of weird lottery ticket. It's happened again. Still, art is valuable in more ways than just monetary worth.
"For years, the whereabouts of Julian Onderdonk's A Field of Bluebonnets, San Antonio, 1921 was something of a mystery. Once dubbed 'the father of Texas painting,' Onderdonk had a knack for capturing the striking beauty of his home state's bluebonnet flowers.
"Yet, for many years, one of the best examples of this oeuvre hung largely unheralded in the home of an Illinois woman. It had been a gift to her to commemorate her birth back in 1922, sent from an extended family member in Texas.
"Depicting an extended vista, atmospheric haze and densely packed fields of bluebonnets, this was Onderdonk at his very best. For the longest time, it hung on her wall, admired by friends and family. Yet there was a brief moment when it almost ended up in goodwill."
