Fast to read romance (and #6 in the Forbidden Desires series) that made time fly by easily.
Hugh Drake, the most whimsical member of the Drake family, wants a clutch badly… and despite his sanctioned period to reproduce nearing its end, he just might get his wish. New information has emerged that suggests Disgraces are dragons and able to bear eggs. All that's left to do is find one Hugh can tolerate, and who better to help him find his perfect match than his steadfast and faithful secretary, Finch?
If only Finch were a Disgrace, but alas. Some things simply aren't meant to be.
Sensible and straightforward Finch has served as Hugh Drake's secretary for over a decade, and secretly loved him for just as long. Hugh is the light of his life, but he's also entirely too gullible, which is why Finch refuses to believe his claim that Disgraces are dragons. They're not. Finch would know, since he is one. But that little fact will have to stay a secret, because Finch would rather his love go unnoticed than be the one who breaks his dragon's heart when he fails to produce a clutch.
Finch is an 80,000 word hilarious omegaverse mpreg-ish romance set following the events of the Forbidden Desires series. It contains an adorably clueless dragon, a faithful secretary whose heart is invested in more than just his job, the best Funfetti cake ever, "slippery" situations, and a single amethyst cufflink. For maximum enjoyment, Finch is best read following the events of Clutch, Bond, Mate, Swallow, and Magpie.
I received an ARC and reviewed honestly and voluntarily
Content warnings include: a/b/o setting featuring mpreg, dragon shifters, unplanned pregnancy, unprotected sex on-page, assault, drugging, extremely binary language, incest (pretty far removed cousins but nevertheless).
Hugh was such a himbo, sweet and kind and oblivious in some things (to the point of being annoyingly childish), yet incredibly inuitive in others. Finch was lovely too, not nearly as severe as he made himself out to be, but organized and competent.
They made for a lovely couple, even though Hugh annoyed me to no end and Finch had to step in constantly, which to me doesn't seem like a long lasting happy relationship... but there was something sweet about it.
The book didn't really expand on the worldbuilding as I had hoped, but it does make a lot of hints towards past and upcoming books of the series. I loved the cameos, but to be honest I would have liked to see more of the characters from the previous books and how they are doing rather than glimpses into upcoming ones.
I had two issues with the book: one was about the extremely binary language. It was always "he or she", "son or daugher", "boy or girl." As a nonbinary reader, I found that exhausting. I mean, hello, gender-neutral language is right there! Also who are we kidding 99% of the cast is and will be male anyways.
The second was about the lack of established consent, which is a reoccurring theme in the series, especially in regards to heats and pregnancy. At no point did anyone consider if Finch wanted kids - even he himself never talks or thinks about it. Of course it all works out for all characters involved in the end and they all very much get what they want, and it's not implied otherwise, but I still found several scenes iffy.
I also could have done without them being cousins. Sure, their relation is pretty far removed (Finch is Hugh's second cousin twice removed) but I feel like there could have been another solution for Finch's heritage that doesn't have them share blood.
Overall a great addition to the series and a sweet romance that I enjoyed myself reading.
Check out the book here.
