Summary

The battle is over, but the war has begun. Now that Daisy Thistledown knows where the missing Botanists are being held captive, she hopes that the people of the Greenwild will help. But they will need the assistance of the lost water realms--and few believe those realms even exist. Daisy and her friends, however, are determined to find them, even if it means sneaking out of the safe haven of Mallowmarsh and embarking on an adventure on the high seas. The sequel to Greenwild.

Review

The City Beyond the Sea takes fans of Greenwild on a whirlwind adventure as they leave the school of magic behind and embark upon an ocean journey. This move keeps the series feeling fresh, even as book two settles into a comfortably familiar adventure tale. New locations and new characters are welcome additions to the story, but the delight in magic and the bravery and kindness shown by the characters remains the same. Readers who were enchanted by the first book will not want to miss the second.

Though older readers will likely predict all the plot twists, something about The City Beyond the Sea feels like a classic middle grade fantasy. The book has it all. A magical quest. Seafaring adventurers. A city lost to the world. A missing heir. Everything about the story enchanted me and I found myself longing to find another reader who had experience this world as well, and who could share my wonder and delight.

But the story does not merely have adventure. It also celebrates courage and kindness, inspiring readers to do the right thing even when it is difficult. It is that kind of philosophy that, for me, really gives a book staying power. Some books are good for amusement and entertainment. Others echo in the heart long after the pages have been closed. Those are the books that make a person think, that make a person believe a little more in the goodness of the world.

The Greenwild series so far has been a marvelous journey, complete with all the aspects of a fantasy world that a reader could want. I look forward to the next installment and to the new adventures and locations that are in store.
