Laceration – I Erode

Over time, there are always big players that begin to make themselves known throughout the vastness of the underground. Labels have always played a large role in bringing about names looking to climb the ranks of obscurity with many not able to make the cut while the exceptional rise to the occasion and dominate at practically every turn with there always being a select group of labels that stand out more than others. By and large, 20 Buck Spin has been making huge moves in recent years to become a need-to-know house of intensity with their power not waning one bit. This year has already been quite bountiful for the label with the arrival of the second album from Laceration the definition of an obvious match for the band and label in damn near every regard.

Three years since putting out their first album, Laceration was poised to do great things with their brand of death metal that knew exactly how to capitalize on the more thrash-oriented approach to the sound. It offered a great base for whatever would come next with time being the only requirement for Laceration to seize its destiny, and they clearly did given all that has been brought forth with "I Erode" and all that it dares to bring to the table. A clear homage to the old school of death metal while never once forgetting to still make this creation their own such that it doesn't wholly lean upon what's come before, the nine tracks offered to us here are no less than utterly harrowing as Laceration shows a devilish understanding of their craft with every given element of "I Erode" a certifiable upgrade from what we saw from its predecessor no matter how impressive that piece was in its own right. Just as overflowing with uncompromising riffs as it is unrelenting sadism that seeks to peel to skin back slowly and torturously such that you feel every ounce of fel might that Laceration holds within the piece, "I Erode" is simply massive and horrific from beginning to end. The band's most mature and competent effort by far, this is the kind of death metal that we're always in need of throughout the underground. Where undead rule supreme and the rot of the flesh is currency, acts like Laceration flourish.

A rising name that puts forth a real behemoth of a record that hold immense power, terror, and has all the promise that one could ask for? That's the kind of magnificence that creates the very backbone of the death metal underworld and has been so since the inception of the sound. Throngs of acts try their damnedest to become a relevant name like what Laceration has done here with "I Erode", yet few manage to achieve the heights we see throughout this creation for it to become the utter powerhouse of devastation that it is.
