Even as we find ourselves in a time where it feels like the very boundaries of metal music itself are being blurred on a regular basis, it cannot be understated how much people still loving looking back into the past and revering those initial creations that allowed us to get here in the first place. There is no school quite like the old school, but that doesn't mean many are able to take those lessons and put together a performance that does those classic efforts justice. It is now and then that we get something that feels like it was properly ripped out of the scene forty, fifty years ago with those creations certainly being hailed for what they accomplish. Hands down, Magmakammer deserves to be given just such praise with their forthcoming effort.
Channeling the past can be quite the tricky thing especially if you're going for a performance that's as reverential as it is still very much so your own creation. Passion and personality can make for quite the push and pull in the making of such pieces as the imbalance of either one can make for a disappointing performance that just falls flat practically right out of the gate. Fortunately, Magmakammer seems to know precisely what it's doing every step of the way with it being every given track throughout the whole of "Before I Burn" that the Norwegian trio shows off a love and proficiency of the style that we are sorely lacking in recent years. Dripping with an old school fuzz but never once lacking in the department of riffs or energy that always keep you viciously engaged no matter what is to come next, "Before I Burn" holds tons of power and hypnotic influence that I don't think many people would be expecting before diving into what these eight tracks have in store. A mesmerizing blast to the past in more ways than one with all the passion and knack for the old school sound that we just don't often see anymore, Magmakammer has hit the nail right on the head in practically every instance to bring forth an experience that doesn't just tap into what was done so many years ago, but brings glory back to the sound in such a way that many can only ever dream of.
Put this album on a shelf amongst many of its influences from decades ago and it would fit right in. Magmakammer pulled out every stop to ensure that this would be a memorable record that held nothing back in ways of fuzz and made damn sure that it's a work that delivers on all fronts. A real homage to what has come before without once forgetting to make it their own work, "Before I Burn" is a clear victory.
