When we're taking into consideration black metal as it first appears in our minds, we tend to think of a cold, ferocious performance that holds nothing back in ways of imagery and is never afraid to tear down the pillars of structure whether that's in the form of society or religion. Not often enough do we get a performance that stands on its own while still staying within the boundaries of what black metal can be with there being maybe a handful of such releases in any given year at best. The year started off strong with the return of Necrowretch delivering just that with that very power having yet to wane.
This is the kind black metal that really puts hair on your chest. The exact breed of power, menace, and finesse that so many strive for throughout all that black metal encompasses with it only on the extremely rarest of occasions that we see a band deliver on that premise in any significant form. From top to bottom, Necrowretch has defied the odds and only furthered their particular brand of chaos with all that's offered within the eight tracks of their fifth full-length album, "Swords of Dajjal". Damn near every given moment of this album is overflowing with a specific kind of evil and immensity that is nigh on infectious with its claws knowing precisely how to sink deep and fast into not just our corporeal flesh, but into the very center of our soul and rends all that it can without prejudice. Just as reliant on melodies as it is unyielding chaos, "Swords of Dajjal" is nothing if not eclectic in its ways to torture yet scintillate the mind in such extravagant ways that black metal simply is not able to do on a regular basis. It's all just outside-of-the-box to feel exceedingly fresh and invigorating yet more than familiar enough to lose yourself in damn near immediately. Necrowretch has been a name to know for some time now, but it is in practically each given moment of this creation that the act has well and truly outdone itself.
The vision of uncompromising right from the beginning and nothing to be taken lightly in its entirety, "Swords of Dajjal" more than lives up to reputation that it has made for itself over these past couple of months. Where we've seen plenty of acts throughout black metal come around and impress, it's no wonder that Necrowretch once again towers above much of the competition.
