Pestilent Death – Pathways to Infinite Malignity

When the going get tough, the tough get through it. In many different ways, that stands as a simple truth as to why the institution of death metal has lasted so long across the decades and through many different eras and generations that all seek to try their hand at bringing further glory to the sound along with all that it has to offer. While I've always had a lot of fun exploring the vast reaches of what can happen when the sound is pushed to crazy extremes, there's nothing that can beat death metal as it was meant to be in its purest form with it fortunately never likely to go away. So long as we have bands like Pestilent Death, we'll never have to worry about it.

If you strip it down to its core foundations with no fuss about what the material in question is all about, death metal should be a fiery piece that is as straightforward in its intensity as it is unbridled in its brutality no matter what particular era of the sound we're talking about. The seething underground has always excelled at offering the most gruesome form of the sound with incredibly little in the way of reprieve for the listener with bands like Pestilent Death perfect examples of just that. Albeit a brief offering, "Pathways to Infinite Malignity" is nothing short of a real tour de force of what death metal can be when its vision is kept crystal clear with the band in question know precisely what they're going for right from the beginning and never once straying from that path. It's been five years since their last outing, and it's evident at every turn throughout this EP that Pestilent Death has not remained wholly inert with their craft moving ever forward in their quest to become true purveyors of what this brand of death metal can bring to the table with "Pathways to Infinite Malignity" more than a step in the right direction. A small peek into what they're capable of while still leaving more than enough room for loads of improvement, Pestilent Death is certainly seeming to be going down the right path for more successful offensives.

Even if it were to take us another five years before we hear another substantial piece from the likes of Pestilent Death, I cannot help but feel as though the wait will have definitely been worth it. Death metal is given extreme justice throughout the whole of this performance with its raw nature and uncompromising core at a consistent pace through the whole of the performance without a shred of compromise to make "Pathways to Infinite Malignity" a bite of undeath that we could all enjoy the taste of.
