There's no wrath like that of a witch scorned.
Seventeen-year-old spirit witch Ava López is the self-appointed guardian of the witches and humans of Darkhaven, an idyllic village nestled between the forest and the sea. Her watch: vicious and bloodthirsty vampires.
Ava is a novice in the eyes of her coven. If she expects to protect them and the secrecy of their powers, she must gain better control of her own. When a full moon ritual goes awry, control may be lost forever, and Ava is exiled from her coven. Forced to seek refuge among the beings she had always sworn herself to hunt, she vows revenge on those who have upended her life.
But the more time Ava spends away from her coven, the more she discovers a startling truth: the witches haven't been honest with her. Ava's quest to strip the truth from everything she's ever known begins with the toughest realization of all—coming to terms with who she has become.
I was pulled in by the concept of witches and vampires being enemies. I loved the idea of this coven protecting humans from this unknown danger. That said, I think things kicked off incredibly fast in this book. From the moment you pick up the book something is happening, beginning to end. I can normally enjoy a fast-paced book but I think this is a good example of what too fast can feel like. I kept wishing things would slow down though, at the same time, it was nice to finish the book quickly.
I think the true evidence of the book being too fast is that I couldn't connect to any of the characters. Not only could I not connect to Ava, but I also felt like she didn't grow very much. I think that was a combination of the author not writing it well enough, but also not giving herself the room to write it (the book is so short).
The same could be said of the worldbuilding. I felt like we got a hint of it, but it was also hard to immerse myself in it because everything flew by too quickly. In the end, I felt like this was an interesting book with potential, but the execution was poor. I was still interested enough that I would give the second book a try, but I'm not sure about the rest of the series.
