Blurb:
It only took one droplet of blood to forever change me.
Her blood.
The taste of it. The heat of it.
I swallowed her down and devoured her.
For a while, it was enough.
My monster was content. I believed I'd found where I belonged.
But now…that droplet is no longer enough.
I want rivers of it. Oceans of it.
I want the world dripping in red and I honestly don't know who I'm hunting anymore.
Her?
Me?
Them?
One thing's for certain, someone is going to die today.
I just hope it won't be me.
Triggers on every warning possible.
This is dark, explicit, and will push every boundary that exists.
Be warned....
And to all those dark souls out there...welcome to The Jewelry Box.
My Review:
"I thought I was strong enough to survive this awful nightmare. I did my best to take back my power and refused to let my heart fall. Only problem is…my heart is an idiot."
Sapphire Scars is the third book in the excellent Jewelry Box series by Pepper Winters. This book is full of anguish, heartbreak and horror as it tells the story of the very dark and intense romance between Henri and Ily. OMG what is Pepper doing to us with this series, talk about break our hearts - this is one hell of an emotional ride. The passion and love between these two is immense. I didn't know who to feel sorry for the most Henri, Ily, Peter or the other jewels.
My heart went out to Henri and it didn't come back the same. I am now a Mercerchist !!
This instalment starts with the conclusion to Victor's Emerald Bruises game. It is action packed right from the start as the Jewels decide how best to avoid being caught. Ily discovers more about the depravity that goes on and the game ends horrifically. What transpires really affects Henri and he has to find a way to cope with everything that happens. He feels trapped, he can't stay but can't go either as can't leave Ily.
Writing and reading become his solace but gradually this has awful side effects. I felt all his pain as he struggled with his depression and desperately tried to cope with the memories of his childhood suddenly returning. It was shocking all he had been forced to do as a child and what he'd endured at the hands of his father.
Ily really shows how strong she is and how much she understands what Henri is going through. She sees his love for her beneath the monster. Her ability to overcome all she is put though is amazing. Her heartbreak at seeing Henri slowly destroyed and shattered, so upset and feeling like he failed her was very emotional. It was so lovely how they start to communicate in their heads, how she supports him when things get rough and the revelation about her name. Like Ily, it made wonder how much Q actually knew about his brother.

Poor Henri, he convinces himself Ily hates him. He feels ashamed and guilty for all he has done to her, he hates that he has hurt her and now wants to be gentle and comfort her. He sees her as his way out of the darkness that constantly tries to pull him back. He has never had anyone care about him before and doesn't feel worthy of her love. However, the tables are turning and she wants and needs the dark side of him while he wants to give her the light . She likes the way he delivers pain and leaves her with proof of his love.
Victor is still suspicious of both of them and warns Henri he won't like the consequences if he's lying to him. He is determined to prove Henri does love Ily because it is unacceptable as a master and an obsession that needs to end. He again does some very cruel things and his games are getting harder and more dangerous.
Henri indulges Victor's friendship to help protect Ily and the other jewels. The endless twisted and deviant things they have to do is really starting to affect them. How much longer can the couple continue to put on a show and pretend about their deepening feelings for each other.
The jewels are plotting to escape and want Ily to persuade Henri to help them. Can the couple distract and mislead Victor enough for the others to work on the plans, but will their scheme be successful or suicidal. Many are just hanging on and hope is a dangerous thing for all of them.
When Victor tells Henri all about his new business ideas, boasts of what else happens in the castle and his revenge plan for Q, he is disgusted. He realises he must do whatever it takes to help the jewels and achieve the mission Q sent him to do, but at what cost.
What will he and Ily have to do to be free? Are they destined to destroy each other or is it fate and they are there to save the other? To him she is worth fighting and maybe dying for. The tension rises and the ending is intense and scary. Who will survive Victor's evil games and will any of them escape. Great cliffhanger ready for the conclusion of the series in Diamond Kisses.
