Their lives are a lie. Their memories may not be real. A new young adult psychological thriller by #1 NYT bestselling author, Kelley Armstrong.
Blythe and her friends — Gabrielle, and brother and sister Tucker and Tanya — have always been a tight friend group, attending a local high school and falling in and out of love with each other. But an act of violence has caused a rift between Blythe and Tucker . . . and unexpected bursts of aggression and disturbing nightmares have started to become more frequent in their lives.
The strange happenings culminate in a shocking event at school: Gabrielle is found covered in blood in front of their deceased principal, with no memory of what happened.
Cracks in their friendship, as well as in their own memories, start appearing, threatening to expose long-forgotten secrets which could change the group's lives forever. How can Blythe and her friends trust each other when they can't even trust their own memories?
This was a very... interesting book. It had its ups and downs. Mystery/thriller really takes on a new meaning in this book when the characters can't even trust their own memories. I remember asking myself what the heck was going on half the time, haha. It was very confusing at times trying to sort out all the details and figure out what was happening, but I was highly invested in seeing things through to get some answers.
I didn't feel too attached to any of the characters. I think Tucker and Blythe might have been the only ones I was interested in. They had a bit of romantic angle to their relationship, but I didn't find myself caring too much about it. I think because the characters felt detached from the story I couldn't bring myself to care about their relationships. I was mostly just looking to figure out what was going on and learning about their backstories for the sake of filling in parts of the plot.
The overall plot ended up being much more complicated than a simple mystery/thriller which was pretty fun, but I still wished the other parts of the book had been just as good. I'm a huge fan of Kelley Arstrong's work and I think this was a pretty ambitious story to tell. Although I enjoyed it, I'm not sure that it was executed as well as her other works. I'd still recommend it though if you're looking for a quick, interesting mystery/thriller!
