For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn't just a game—it's a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.
Convinced she's going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game's creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year's tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika's whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she's only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

Wow, I am blown away by how amazing this book was. I'm kicking myself for not reading it earlier! And I can say that it's aged really well. It's a bit older (not super old), but it's still such a great book! I've already added Marie Lu to the list of authors I'm determined to read more from.
The world building was so well done in this book. I particularly loved how the online world was described so vividly. I could easily picture this as a stunning sci-fi movie or video game like Mirror's Edge. I loved the game, warcross, and all the different levels that the players/characters encountered.
This is also really diverse with characters of different races and backgrounds. There's even some LGBTQ rep and one of the main characters is in a wheelchair. Each of these characters was so well-written, I loved them all. My favorite, of course, was Emika. She was so driven, resourceful, intelligent, and adaptable. I loved how she always thought outside the box and was so determined to help others.
The plot was exciting and much more complicated than I could have imagined. I was racing to the end just to get more answers and see where it all would go. The ending left me reaching for the next book. I had so much fun reading it and I just know this is going to be one of my all-time favorite duologies. I highly recommend it if you haven't read it already!
