In recent years, we've seen an undeniable rise in bands that bring about black metal with a clear folk-inspired edge that's as strong as it gets. While there has certainly been an increase in such acts as time has gone on, the chase for quality simply has not changed in the slightest. There definitely are a few new names on the list, but the old bastions still remain so long as we give them the proper time to work their magic. It's been eight years since we last heard from SIG:AR:TYR, but their old magic clearly has not waned.
A band can make or break itself many times over within the span of eight years with only the best able to overcome such a challenge and come out on top in such a way that doesn't just make for another highlight of the given style but deliver a work that is simply a standout creation in an exemplary discography. Simply put, SIG:AR:TYR has achieved that very spectacle with the nine tracks of their fifth album, "Citadel of Stars". It's far from the most complex work where we've seen folk and black metal brought together for a singular experience that exudes a Nordic theme many times over, but in no way does SIG:AR:TYR deserve to be compared to many of its contemporaries with it having been years since they had already set themselves apart from much of the competition since they first started throwing down greatness over twenty years ago now. Sweeping melodies and a grandiose understanding of what this style can be when it's tempered and focused into a singular vision, "Citadel of Stars" is nigh on captivating from beginning to end. The stars tell the tales and sing of great deeds that have come to pass and leave room for those that are yet to come with SIG:AR:TYR more than perfect vessel to ensure that each and every one of those legends is a sight we must experience.
A clear high mark for what SIG:AR:TYR has accomplished before, some may not be enchanted by what is brought forth here, and I would implore each and every one of them to really dive deep into what this album to offer. "Citadel of Stars" consists of the very best that we could hope to see from metal of this variety, and time will come to hail SIG:AR:TYR for what it has accomplished here.
