BTOB are most celebrated for their stately ballads and light pop music that showcases their vocals. However, the group are capable of much more than that. I'm partial to their many dalliances with new jack swing, mostly because those songs let the guys have fun in a more carefree way. New sub-unit single Tang Tang Tang (탕탕탕) follows a similar trajectory.
You can thank Korea's Waterbomb festival for this track. Members Eunkwang and Minhyuk needed a new song to perform and Tang Tang Tang became the perfect energy burst to hype up an eager crowd. It's a boisterous party track with retro hip-hop influence, contained to two and a half minutes without a moment of downtime. Tang Tang Tang kicks off with high energy and only careens further from there.
The song definitely feels a bit novelty in execution, but under the veneer of silliness there's much to appreciate. I love the aggressive rhythm guitar (a major 2024 K-pop trend) and bounding production. I'm not sure how the shouted chorus will age, but it's certainly a mood lifter and must sound incredible in a concert setting. More than anything, Eunkwang and Minhyuk's commitment is infectious. They sell the hell out of the song.
