The members of YG Entertainment group Winner have become well known as soloists, but before today main dancer Lee Seunghoon (Hoony) was the only one without an official solo debut. My Type (딱 내 스타일이야) acts as a funky springboard for his first mini album, delivering a bright blast of groovy pop.
Seunghoon gets to showcase his skills as both a singer and rapper, though My Type feels most potent as a venue for fun choreography. It melds old school synths with a trendy, bass-driven arrangement. The song's hook is catchy and economical, letting its seesawing hooks do most of the talking. A second verse rap becomes My Type's most explosive segment, but the more vocally demanding parts also carry a lithe flow that keeps the rhythm churning.
While My Type is relentlessly enjoyable, the song rarely rises beyond that. It's an amiable party track that does a nice job establishing Seunghoon's musical color and personality. Its ambitions are relatively meager, and that's totally fine. However, it limits my ratings to the solid-but-unspectacular 8's.
