Some Generalizing
This season was pretty great. I'm just going to state that outright because I am ranking them. In a lesser season, the shows I put in the okay section would actually be at least in the Good section. Mainly because I don't have that many gripes about them, some series just needed to be losers compared to others because that's how it goes.
Not Listed in this post: Dead Dead Demons Dedede Destruction and Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture. It's still early days for these so I can't just throw them in a list that I am writing final post on them. They might have their own posts in the future though.
A Handy Guide for how I feel about shows:
Solid: Seasonal Favorites, Highly Recommend.
Good: Maybe not as high quality as the first category, but still pretty enjoyable.
Ok: What it says on the tin. Maybe preferable for those who are into the genre the show is from.
Bad: I'm not even sure why I am still watching it besides maybe learning something from it.
Delicious in Dungeon (Cour 2)
This cour was just as good as the first cour. Just that the world got explored more, there were more character interactions and stories, and the plot that was bubbling in the first cour in one off episodes now explores a bit more. Senshi, Chilchuck, Marcille, and Liaos also get a new gang member by the name of Izutsumi who is a cat being and is just a personified cat. It's really good stuff and I couldn't recommend this show at all because it's great.
Sound! Euphonium Season 3
This season is just pure good. Everything about it, which is essentially looking at Kumiko and seeing how much she has changed from the first season to now to become the leader, was good. This was the season of friendships being tested when it comes to auditions that put in so much tension to see who plays in the band itself. Kumiko did consistently get the short straw but she grew as a result and it's all wonderful stuff. The only complaint I have is that there isn't more performances through out the season, but there was a great amount of character drama replaced a bit of it.
Laid-Back Camp Season 3
It's more Laid-Back Camp. What else am I supposed to say? This season evolved the characters a bit with them trying new things and becoming stronger campers. Rin herself is spending more time with friends then ever before and I think Nadeshiko is just being herself, but Chiaki went on her solo camping trip, and Aoi got a bike to do more individual things at further distances. Plus, there are more possible campers in the future. It's just a good time.
Astro Note
I really enjoyed this show. It was the perfect blend that you can get of Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku. Good plot of the story of finding the key and seeing Mira decide to step down from being a queen and just own Astro Lodge. Also, the final episode with amazing with the lodge turning into a giant robot and fighting alien invaders. It's just a good, comfy time with natural weirdness.
The Fable
I think there is one major flaw with the entire story centering itself around Misaki and possibly exploiting her, but I do love this little bit of a Yakuza drama. The writing is over all excellent and Akira has changed so much since just getting a day job and living a normal life. It's too bad that the yakuza around him started causing issues, but he is the most powerful person on the board. I love the general cast and the bad guys are generally just bad guys as a whole that hopefully can change their ways like Akira is starting too.
Wonderful Precure (Cour 2)
This set of episodes was based around Mayu and the cat Yuki joining the precure team alongside Iroha and Komugi and it was full of feelings. Full of anxiety, depression, and happiness. Especially since Mayu and Yuki got so many connections with Iroha, Satoru, and Komugi. Plus the whole precure dance of the team becoming four and really cool precure capture sessions.
Kaiju No 8
There isn't that much depth to this story, but it's a pretty standard shonen stuff that also puts in a little bit of Ultraman and standard super hero stuff in the mix. It's a really good shonen show with great characters, the main one being a 32 year old man who turns into a kaiju, and so many great characters. It's really solid stuff and the action show that I look forward to the most every Saturday.
Urusei Yatsura (Season 2) Cour 2
I really liked this cour. It took the build up from the previous cour with huge signs of Ataru not being a heartless person that comes to Lum from the time and dimension hopping and played it up. Especially with the end turning into a multidimensional game of Tag between Ataru and Lum to save the Earth. The two stubborn people did get their feelings with each other without saying much and the two will continue to live how they have been but with lighter hearts. It's generally a good time.
Train to the End of the World
I wasn't sure if this one would even end up here, but the finale was pretty great and everything generally tied together pretty well. There were some oddball episodes I didn't enjoy, but the girls adventures were generally fun and it was also pretty honest as the girls face one challenge after another while looking deeper into themselves. I loved the strangeness even if it's a bit loud, but the last few episodes were a bit more subtle with Shizuru and Yoka did make up in the end and the world itself didn't change.
Bartender: Glass of God
This is a show that really had it's strength in the back half. The set up for this show was the first half where the show was building it's cast and general conflicts. The second half hit a lot more emotions as the bartender Sasakura finally did take his job at the hotel after having his own emotional journey. It's all a good time.
Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf (Cour 1)
It's modern spice and wolf. I don't have that much to say other then it followed the two arcs in the original series with more accurate to the manga stuff and the art is modern and less consistent. It's written pretty well and the chemistry between Holo and Lawrence was great. So I do recommend this one.
Jellyfish Can't Swim At Night
I don't like putting this show here, but it was the weakest one for me. That first half with Mei, Kiui, Mahiru, and Kano meeting and forming the online idol group Jelee was great. So many little things came across in terms of really good plots and drama that were just wonderful. The second half was a mess. It was all over the place with some really good drama episodes and some that were just weird. Also, Mei got the shaft so badly. It's still a decent show, but it could have congealed so much better.
Conclusion and Toward the Future
So those are my thoughts on the spring season. Yeah, just good stuff in general. I'm not sure what I'm going to be watching next season, but keep an eye out for my seasonal posts about it.
