Synopsis
Kristen Petersen doesn't do drama, will fight to the death for her friends, and has no room in her life for guys who just don't get her. She's also keeping a big secret: facing a medically necessary procedure that will make it impossible for her to have children.
Planning her best friend's wedding is bittersweet for Kristen -- especially when she meets the best man, Josh Copeland. He's funny, sexy, never offended by her mile-wide streak of sarcasm, and always one chicken enchilada ahead of her hangry. Even her dog, Stuntman Mike, adores him. The only catch: Josh wants a big family someday. Kristen knows he'd be better off with someone else, but as their attraction grows, it's harder and harder to keep him at arm's length.
The Friend Zone will have you laughing one moment and grabbing for tissues the next as it tackles the realities of infertility and loss with wit, heart, and a lot of sass.

My second read by this popular author (having read Yours Truly last year) and I really enjoyed it. I breezed right through it!
It was a bit of a rough start for me. Kristen, who has a great name and spells it the correct way ;), rubbed me the wrong way in that opening scene with the car accident. I wish we'd had her perspective first to explain the rough day she was having, but she didn't explain that until much later in the story. I felt like it would have gone a long way to warming me up to her sooner. Instead, my first impression of her was that she didn't want to take responsibility for her own actions and was kind of waspish.
Eventually, we did get her POV and that helped build sympathy with her, if more slowly than I'd have expected. I loved that she was an honest, no BS kind of person. She might equivocate and deflect, but her heart was in the right place. I'm not sure I bought the mommy issues as a plot device and frankly thought that the lady doth protest too much about giving in to the relationship she obviously wants. The mommy issues weren't alluded to in any of Kristen's chapters before the brunch scene, so there was no build up, no hints or foreshadowing, making me think the issues were annoying to the MC but not strong enough to be used as a plot device.
The banter between Kristen and Josh drew me in, as did the hilarious antics Kristen pulled on her best friend Sloan, all of which had me laughing out loud often. I loved the women's health rep here too, as an endo girlie, it was something I can relate to wholeheartedly. I especially loved Josh's reaction to her periods, not getting weirded out by them but being understanding and supportive.
Josh was such a great character, total cinnamon roll. I loved how he loved Kristen, even when she made it impossible to do so, how he never gave up. And when tragedy strikes, I love that they were able to figure things out together.
It didn't hit it out of the park for me, but it still scored a run. It was a touching story and very enjoyable. If you're looking for an easy beach read, this one won't disappoint!
Until next time,
