The Magician Who Bought Dreams

By Swapna Peri on 19 Jul 2024

Ghost hunters and paranormal detectives dive into the realm of the mysterious and unexplained, striving to uncover the truths behind supernatural phenomena. Armed with an array of tools, from electromagnetic field detectors to infrared cameras, they explore haunted sites, capture evidence of ghostly activities, and attempt to communicate with spirits. Blending scientific methods with intuitive approaches, these investigators seek answers where traditional explanations fail, pushing the boundaries of our understanding of reality. Their work not only delves into the unknown but also fascinates popular culture, making them captivating figures in paranormal research.

In this connection, one of my author friend, Vikkram Dewan, has released a new book titled The Magician Who Bought Dreams. Having enjoyed his previous works, I eagerly anticipated this book, which introduces readers to Mishti and Jogawar, Indian paranormal detectives who tackle otherworldly cases. Dewan skillfully merges supernatural intrigue with eerie narratives, drawing readers into dark tunnels and foggy alleys filled with strange beings and phenomena. The titular magician buys people's dreams and makes them vanish, while other tales feature a radio tuning into divine conversations, the shape-shifting 'Whore of Babylon,' and a cursed wine glass serving as a portal to other worlds. Dewan's storytelling is both chilling and captivating, making this collection a must-read for genre enthusiasts.

Characters and Stories
Mishti and Jogawar's chemistry is a highlight, with Mishti's disdain for Jogawar's girlfriend, Kopisha, adding humor to the dark themes. The book comprises five stories: two featuring the detectives and three standalone tales, each intensely terrifying. The horror elements are designed to linger in your thoughts and make your skin crawl. Dewan's ability to create bone-chilling scenarios is evident, engrossing readers in suspense and fear throughout each story.

About the Author
Vikkram Dewan, a Delhi-based author renowned for exploring the mysterious, occult, and paranormal, has a multifaceted career as a writer, editor, and researcher. His interests span historical fiction, thrillers, adventure, horror, and supernatural themes. Dewan gained recognition with his Warlock series, delving into Satanic black magic, Indian Tantra, and occult practices, earning acclaim from readers and critics alike. He adeptly fuses Indian and Western cultural elements in his narratives, appealing to a diverse audience. Besides the Warlock series, Dewan's notable works include Chedipe: Indian She-Vampire, co-authored with Vikas Nainwal, and The Tattoo Series: Volume 1. His fascination with the esoteric extends beyond writing, as he also researches the mystical and the unknown.

Final Thoughts
The Magician Who Bought Dreams is an excellent read for horror enthusiasts and fans of the paranormal and occult. Dewan's straightforward language and vivid descriptions create an engaging experience, with hints at future adventures for Mishti and Jogawar leaving readers eager for more. Although the final story about a warlock may be disturbing for some, it adds a new dimension to the collection. And, the beautiful mystic cover adds beauty to the book.

Overall, "The Magician Who Bought Dreams", with its colorful and mystic cover, offers a thoroughly enjoyable and spine-chilling journey into the supernatural. Recommended for anyone seeking a hauntingly good read, Dewan's latest work promises to leave a lasting impression.
