When Calle Berlin shivered on its unsure ground where the engineers had drained Lake Texcoco
you were lying naked in the white bed beside the window and I was staring at your body
when the bomb fell a mother was walking to the market with her baby on her back
and their eyeballs melted before she could scream. You love your mother so much,
I know, baby, and I found you in your grandpa's yard blinking up at the branches of the Live Oak like you
were gonna cry at the meaning they have given trees in Louisiana.
Sometimes the sweetest people suffer until they are walking ghosts, skin draping
off their muscles like Spanish Moss. My mother lost her mind as a young
woman. This is a story about war and I wanna cry when I think of how my dog died after my stepmother
kicked us out of the house because he thought we'd left him. A broken heart means nothing
once the human in us is dead and I have seen people as ghosts on the streets in Freetown,
the blind girl looking through me and gesturing to her open mouth and stomach
we must all be fed and feed yourself lunch, baby, there is probably
something in the fridge and I will run by the store tonight if I have time.
