In damn near every regard, death metal has been a sprawling beast for some time that has never once been afraid to turn inwards while making damn sure that there are still endless possibilities where few might expect them to be. We've seen the sound stretched and contorted to be combined with all sorts of different styles throughout the underground with as many attempts succeeding as there are those that fail. Some, however, manage to standout even more so and venture down paths that few others can accomplish. Typhonian has been a rising name doing just such splendor in the underground, but it's with their forthcoming creation that they've certainly reached a fantastic new height.
It seems to be that most bands are content in choosing one of two paths: fully embracing all that the old school has to offer or ditching it completely to go down a path incredibly few can pull off. There's plenty of merit along both routes, but it is when a band is able to release itself from those shackles and manage to deliver something that is truly their own that we can see some of the very best that modern death metal can offer. Through clear reverence for the genre's halcyon days while continuously pushing the envelope in more ways than one, Typhonian does more than impress with all that is within "The Gate of the Veiled Beyond". Undeniably progressive yet still taking cues from the core lessons of the old school of death metal, this album practically has it all! From its expansive atmospheres driven by brilliant musicianship and loads of flair alongside intensity born from a deep understanding of the death metal at play here, Typhonian could have very easily bitten off more than it could chew with all that it dared to execute within these eight tracks with mastery, passion, and a magnificently clear artistic vision allowing them to persevere where others would have surely failed. Without even taking into consideration the behemoth that is the 20-minute finale, "The Gate of the Veiled Beyond" offers no reprieve for any who want death metal to be intense but has no shortage of raw majesty in damn near every given drop that's to be had within this absolute well of excellence.
Death metal has become a many-sided die in recent times with the digital golden age of the underground that we find ourselves in, and Typhonian is but one of many throngs of competent acts out there that show us just how much the sound still has to offer us so long as it's put in the right hands. If nothing else is to be learned from the cosmic reaches of "The Gate of the Veiled Beyond" it's the simple fact that the hands of Typhonian are most certainly the right hands.
