Young musician Noam Fainer came across my radar with a submission of his track "London Dreaming". About the track, he said:
"I wrote and recorded this song in a moment of great pain, I was dreaming of moving to London and perusing my music career out there, but was stuck in a daytime job in the deserts of Israel. After releasing the song, as I started my daytime shift at the cafe at 6:00 I found out that the song was featured by none other than Frank Ocean as the closer of his Apple Music Homer Radio show (Episode 15')."
Getting a co-sign from Frank Ocean is a pretty good way to get the world's attention. And listening to the track, you can hear why it would have mass appeal. The drums play a hip-hop style rhythm, while faint keys and strings add a melancholy sway to the song. Then Fainer's vocals showcase a raw, natural talent, bringing an extra poignancy to the poetic lyrics of escapism ("you walk away in a foreign land, the trees turn away and sigh").
But Fainer had far more than one good song in his pocket. "Forever Young" is a vulnerable folk track with somber orchestration that speaks to the youth in all of us. "It's All Too Much" sounds like lo-fi Oasis without the disaffected "cool" facade, and "Manchester 1980" breaks out spoken-word post-punk with rambunctious indie rock.
