Country: Vanuatu
Per the group's own words, Paran Latan is a band that "embodies the spirit and voice of women from Vanuatu." Rooted in Natvaar language, Paran Latan translates to "Tanna Women," and if you're unfamiliar with Vanuatu, it is a mosaic of over 80 islands in the South Pacific, each with its own unique traditions and languages.
The band's songs are a celebration of the diversity of their homeland, a fusion of the melodies of Tanna (the island the band hails from), the rhythmic heartbeat of their customs and the soulful sounds of folk, all brought to life by enchanting vocals and world instrumentation.
Their first single, "Awe Koloini," is written in a mix of broken French and Natvaar, reflecting the way people speak in Tanna. The composition, a tribute to matriarchs who have shaped the group's lives, includes the unique guitar style of John Frum movement (a Cargo cult), and a rhythm akin to the zouk beat, giving it a lovely and serene vibe that is almost spiritual.
"Show Some Love" is a more traditional folk sound, featuring acoustic guitar, and a mix of soulful vocals and reggae-style toasting, while promoting unity among people and nature. Then there's the sprightly "When I Look Into Your Eyes," with its finger-picked fiddle opening bringing in hints of bluegrass, while the vocal harmonies have elements of soulful gospel. And yet, the track wouldn't feel out of place on a Lilith Fair playlist alongside artist like Alanis Morissette and other 90's folk-leaning rockers.
There's an authenticity to the band's production and sound that adds to their relatability and the power of what they are singing about. Take a listen to a couple of the group's tracks in our World Watch Playlist!
