Geelong scored 168 points against the West Coast Eagles on Saturday afternoon, a performance that helped them jump GWS into 3rd on the ladder.
That score would've overtaken the Gold Coast's score of 164 points against Geelong in Darwin in Round 10 as the highest score by any team this AFL season...
However, the Hawthorn-North Melbourne in Launceston was moved from 4:35pm to start at 12:30pm due to the electricity worker's strike in Tasmania, and the Hawks would go on to score 170 points and defeated the Kangaroos by 124 points, giving them the highest score of the season an hour before the Cats could claim the record, and the greatest winning margin of 2024, on the same day Geelong held the greatest half-time lead of any team in 2024 (100 points).
Thus, moving the Hawks game forward 4 hours meant Geelong were briefly denied the great achievement of producing the highest score of 2024 and conceding the second-highest score of 2024.
Ultimately, 168 points wasn't even the highest score of 2024.
Nor was it the highest score of Round 24.
Nor was it the highest score in the month of August.
In fact, it wasn't even the highest score by a team on the afternoon of August 24, 2024.
