Given the sheer density of what the death metal underground has to offer, it's only natural to assume that it can take a band several years across multiple albums in order to make their presence known on a large enough scale to get people to really turn their heads and pay attention to what such a name is throwing down. Sometimes, however, we're given a name that manages to make waves right out of the gate. Ashen Tomb is most definitely one of those acts as they've become one of the most promising names to have come out of Finland in just the last few years. Now, preparing to lay waste with their first full-length album, Ashen Tomb is poised to break the mold and become a need-to-know act.
Having only thrown down their first piece of material just two years ago, Ashen Tomb has not remained still since. Clearly an act that gained momentum within itself early on and honing its devastating craft to such a degree that it demanded the attention of any who came in the band's path, Ashen Tomb has been hard at work to not just challenge itself to become the most imposing beast that it can become, but something that can standout in the vast underground. That alone is a grand task that only the best of the best are able to overcome, and to just look within "Ecstatic Death Reign" is to face yourself with the possibility that Ashen Tomb may just be such a name. Given everything that's thrown down within this tremendous piece, it's evident that Ashen Tomb has achieved its most terrific form yet with all the power, grandeur, and brutality that one could ask for from a name that has been building towards such a glorious offensive tirelessly for two years now. While there are plenty that seek to change the very game with their brand of death metal, Ashen Tomb delivers a taste of the sound that's as true to that original vein as we could possibly ask for while leaving more than enough space for Ashen Tomb to inject its own personality to quickly allow the death metal to go from potentially boring in lesser hands to an unmitigated success in the hands of a band like this.
In the vast expanse that the underground realms have to offer, talent is only inevitably over time even if it might feel like an eternity between discovering qualifying acts. When Ashen Tomb first came around, there were some of us that saw the raw potential within the band's sound with "Ecstatic Death Reign" bringing it all full circle. A deluge of intensity and menacing prowess that we don't see often enough, Ashen Tomb's overwhelming offensive upon all of life has just taken its biggest step towards global domination.
