I enjoy the finer things in life. When it comes to heavy, sludge metal, I need my sludge to be as heavy and dark as possible. The new EP Well of Souls from Eldergrey delivers exactly that. Eldergrey is a new project between ex-SNUB member Ian Field-Richards and Clive Withers. My favorite track from the EP is the second track, the expansive and thumping "Black River."
This no-frills, hard hitting, and doom laden offering from the duo of musicians is sure to make your head nod. The guitars and bass chug along throughout the first section of the song, until a climax brings on an extended coda featuring a soaring guitar solo. "Black River" features ear worms for fans of doom metal, prog rock, and everything in between.
The lyrics to "Black River" were written by bassist Clive Withers. The tone of the singing is epic as the refrain "Drag under Black River" repeats during the chorus. The dystopian vibe of the singing fits Eldergrey's doom and riff laden sound.
Eldergrey reminds me of titular bands like High On Fire or Crowbar. Their passion shines through in their debut handful of songs, and I hope they can get out on the road in the near future! Look out for a performance from them around their hometown of Worcester, England, or keep in touch with them by following their Facebook page.
