Moving forward as a band in the underground is to find yourself with quite the dilemma in some instances with the simple prospect of grandiosity something that can lure any unsuspecting act to a downfall most unfortunate. It's important to know when enough is enough and pull back with only the finest of acts able to come forward and deliver material that well and truly feels like an evolution of what they've accomplished before. Having already caught the attention of many with their previous work, Glacial Tomb faced that very dilemma as they crafted their second album with the results fitting the band's undeniable ambition for a bigger and far more aggressive beast of an album.
It is endlessly tempting for any artist with a knack for intense detail to want to make their work as refined and honed as possible with it being a common pitfall to find some dedicated soul toiling away at their creation far long than what is necessary with the end result feel over-produced and trying to bite off far more than what it could chew. That's a fate nobody wants to see, and it was after doing some reading on the new album from Glacial Tomb, "Lightless Expanse", that I cannot deny a subtle pang of worry in the back of my mind. But a few tracks into this new offering of cosmic immensity, however, and it becomes exceedingly clear that Glacial Tomb has certainly capitalized on their potential for greatness. It's in every one of these nine offerings of unforgiving madness from beyond the stars that Glacial Tomb cranked every given aspect of their sound up to a thousand to ensure that "Lightless Expanse" is a powerful wall of sound that holds nothing back, demonstrates great technicality in each minute, and knows precisely what move to make next for maximum impact. A singularly intense experience that learned from the mistakes of others and sought to deliver a work that was as heavy as it was jam-packed with soul and personality the likes of which only the best of extreme metal can encapsulate, Glacial Tomb's prowess is growing at a staggering rate.
What could have easily ended up as a listen that sought heights too great and fell far as a result, Glacial Tomb shows us what it means to be masterful at the craft and precisely how to be extremely detailed without once going past the point of no return. "Lightless Expanse" is unapologetic in its immensity in every regard with the future of the act bright despite the band's dark intentions.
