The smell of pig and cattle offal and burning oatmeal. Cruising the Ave, criss-crossed with the river, kids with their windows down in winter hot and high and hungry. Summers at the pool kissing behind bushes. Sun-warmed, rain- washed raspberries and cherry tomatoes. It was not as flat as one would expect. The neighbor who sat on the carcass of his old car was the least scary thing on the way home from school under the white, bright, listless sky, that filigree of gauze between the endless now and the ghostly future.
