General Thoughts On The Season
This season is a lesser season in some respects. It feels like other than a few high profile sequels, everything else doesn't have as much of a following. So let me say this, that's not a bad thing. There is a large selection of shows coming from all genres that are more then watchable even if they aren't the best things ever. It's a good season to check out things you wouldn't otherwise and I think cool down seasons between ones that are going to be absolute bangers.
I picked up more shows then I originally expected too once again. In other people's opinions, I'm probably missing out on a few. These were the ones that appealed to me the most and I might get to the others later. Or I won't. Following seasonals is hard after all.
A Handy Guide for how I feel about shows:
Solid: Seasonal Favorites, Highly Recommend.
Good: Maybe not as high quality as the first category, but still pretty enjoyable.
Ok: What it says on the tin. Maybe preferable for those who are into the genre the show is from.
Bad: I'm not even sure why I am still watching it besides maybe learning something from it.
Dead Dead Demons Dedede Destruction
Oh my goodness, this show is crazy good and one of the most unique ones I've seen in a while. This is the story of a UFO stalling over Tokyo and the fall out of hatred. First comes the radiation from the government attacking the ships that try to land on causing untold destruction to the city below. Tokyo is currently at war and that is interesting by itself. But this is a story of a group of girls trying to live a normal life while everything is happening and it's so fascinating and explores a lot of things. It's incredible stuff. Read my post about it.
Oshi No Ko Season 2
The first half is focused on the stage play of the Tokyo Blade manga and it's great. It's complicated, beyond well directed, and gives each actor and production member on the stage play an Arc. It's so good and I couldn't sing it's praises enough. Oh my goodness am I blown away by this every week.
Dungeon People
I find every part of this anime just so fascinating and so emotional. By itself with the look into the mechanics of how this dungeon it's functioning from how the monsters live to giving treasure in the dungeon that explorers pick up to the employees working there. Clay finding out how the dungeon works while searching for her father and getting stronger with Belle having her own issues as the young boss of the dungeon is great character stuff. This is the underrated show of the season.
The Fable
The last Yakuza arc started and another one is starting up with so many interesting layers. Especially with the more recent villains being so much sneakier and clever. The tale of a hitman trying to live a normal life with that going on is so interesting too. All in all, the writing is carrying it with the animation being very realistic. It's been such an interesting ride.
Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines
This show's concept is just so interesting. I mean, girls not getting the boyfriend they want because there was a natural winner is normal romcom stuff. They aren't the main couple and usually get shafted, but having them be the focus around a harmless otaku boy who gets entangled in their madness is a ki of fun. The characterizations of these messy girls is fun and I do think Nuku is a fun protagonist to have the madness happen too. High quality stuff,
Wonderful Precure (Cour 3)
It's more of this show with the four Precure and Satoru hanging out, going on events, and saving animals by being Precure. It's a lot of comfy, adorable fun. Very good just for having those elements around each other and building some sort of sense of community between them. The latest episode finally revealed a villainous force and I want to see how that changes the norm because it's going to hit hard.
Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings In Russian
This is a very good romcom with fantastic and complex, multifaceted characters. The chemistry between Alya and Kuze is really good. There is clearly some good chemistry between them. The rest of the cast on the student council is comfy and the coming election is building great stakes. The only compliant I kind of have is, even if it's well motivated in each scene, is the fanservice. Also, there is some fluff feels like it's spinning it's wheels even if those are still enjoyable episodes.
Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf (Four 2)
I find this cour really good. I think the magic of the original show is unbeatable, but this show is capturing some of it. The latest arc with Pyrite was pretty great and gave the magic of the strangeness of the world. Also interrogating Holo and Lawrence's relationship thus making it stronger and more defined. It's good stuff and I happily return to it each week.
Suicide Squad Isekai (Completed)
I have a post about this show coming next week because it just finished. In a less detailed thought compared to what I wrote, it's what you expect it to be. The suicide squad is going on an Isekai adventure and it's some really fun stuff.
Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture
In general, this one is Code Geass but less in a lot of ways. The enemy is Neo Britannia and they only have control over Hokkaido instead of Japan by itself. The size of the show is smaller, the cast is smaller, and I think it has some trouble of knowing when to insert the cast of the original series and the new cast of this show. It's still really fun and well produced too. I may have to write about this show when it's over because there are complex things I want to talk about with it.
Narenare - Cheer For You!
This show is really soft and wonderful. Very positive messages and the concept of girls coming together to cheer and improve each other while cheering up the world around them is great. As a whole, the cast is great but the show was very unfocused until this halfway point.
Bye, Bye Earth
This is a show that is carried more by its unique ideas and concepts then it's characters. The world of Bye, Bye Earth is unique. It's a world of people that have animal features despite not having seen any animals anywhere besides beasts so far. Belle is our protagonist and she is the only one without animal features. So that along with unexplained at the moment concepts, like her being a girl of reason, and how her current journey of being a solist before she becomes a Wanderer is interesting. But it is a show that is more supported by those concepts and then characters are second or third and it makes it a little less interesting.
Kinnikuman Perfect Origin
I wish that I knew so much more about Kinnikuman then I do, because I jumped into this one without any knowledge of it or even the English name Ultimate Muscle. So putting it here isn't a fault of the show itself, but I am missing a lot of context to make this show feel stronger then it is. But, it is good old school shonen battle stuff in the form of wrestling and it's been just a simple delight to watch. That's about all I have at the moment for this.
The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies
A very simple concept that hasn't gone beyond Magical Girl and Evil Lt. are in love with each other and go on dates. Which is fine because the concept is so good and carries a lot of complicated feelings for both sides. And there is a stalemate because the Lt is still attached to his organization. But it is getting a bit tedious and I hope the characters who were introduced recently help push things a bit more then they are at the moment.
What Could Happen Next?
I am hoping that everything in this list becomes amazing or stays amazing. How great would it be if all 14 of these shows were suddenly peak fiction? But I think that if everything stayed where they are and just continued to be interesting, that would be fine with me. But I think every show should have its chance in the sun. I will let you know with my seasonal ending post if anything in this ranking has changed. As usual, nothing in this ranking is stuck because the quality of shows always goes up and down from episode to episode. That's just the nature of media itself.
Anyway, what shows are you watching this season and how do you feel about each of them?
