Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.
A couple of weeks ago, the topic of Top 10 was a freebie, so I selected Debut Novels. I've enjoyed quite a few debut novels but these came to mind first:
1, Lois McMaster Bujold: Shards of Honor
Bujold's first novel is a blend of adventure and romance. It stars Cordelia Naismith, a scientist and the captain of a science spaceship. The main character for the rest of the series is Cordelia's son Miles, but I especially love the two books starring Cordelia: Shard's of Honor and Barrayar.
2, Elizabeth Peters: Crocodile on the Sandbank
The first book in the historical mystery series starring the indomitable Amelia Peabody was already a lot of fun.
3, Steven Brust: Jhereg
The first book in the Vlad Taltos series. Vlad is a human assassin in a world ruled by the Dragaerans, Brust's version of the elves. Vlad is also a witch and has a familiar. Their banter is hilarious and full of sarcasm and irony.
4, Peter O'Donnell: Modesty Blaise
I cheated a little with this one because I read O'Donnell's Modesty Blaise comic strips long before I read his first Modesty novel. Still, it's a very enjoyable thriller/spy adventure.
5, Kerry Greenwood: Cocaine Blues
Another mystery series with a delightfully independent main heroine. Phryne Fisher is an independently wealthy and the first female private detective in 1920s Melbourne.
6, Genevieve Cogman: The Invisible Library
Cogman's series is a delightful mix of alternative realities, dragons, the fae, and magic. Irene Winters is a librarian whose job is to steal books from other worlds. She and her partner also get mixed up in the middle of the politics between the dragons, who represent order, and the fae who represent chaos.
7, Jasper Fforde: The Eyre Affair
Thursday Next is a literature detective: she goes inside books to catch criminals and solve mysteries. It's a fun and funny humorous fantasy series.
8, Agatha Christie: The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Hercules Poirot)
The first book starring Hercules Poirot.
9, Andy Weir: The Martian
Weir's book was made also in the very successful movie, the Marian. Mark Watney is a botanist and an astornaut. He was left accidentally on Mars and now he must survive on his own for years until a rescue can be mounted.
10, Theodora Goss: The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter
The daughters (and other creations) of famous male literary figures come together and have adventures as friends. Some of them view themselves as "monsters" who don't have really a place in society, especially in the Victorian era. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson have brief cameos. However, the writing style too some getting used to and isn't for everyone.
