In a market brimming with flavourful competition, Uhuru XO Caribbean Golden Rum stands out, not just for its rich, tropical flavours, but for its unique ethical stance. This is more than just a rum, it's a passion project turned into a purposeful brand that champions wildlife conservation in Africa.
Distilled and matured in the tropical climate of Venezuela, Uhuru XO Caribbean Golden Rum is a testament to inspired craftsmanship. After soaking up the sun in its cask (for at least six years), acquiring a golden hue in the process, the rum is transported to Young Spirits' Edinburgh-based bottling house, where it undergoes its final stages of maturation before being bottled at 44% ABV.
The team has gone out of its way to preserve those telltale Caribbean flavour notes.
On the nose, Uhuru Caribbean XO Golden Rum opens with the inviting aroma of banana skins and roasted pineapples. On the palate, these fruity notes mingle with cinnamon, cloves, and peppery spice.
This rum can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or mixed into a classic cocktail. My sample didn't last long enough to try all three.

The Uhuru story begins with John Ferguson, a wildlife enthusiast and co-founder of Young Spirits. As a child, Ferguson spent countless summers in the sun-soaked landscapes of Kenya, captivated by majestic African elephants and the wild beauty of the savanna.
These early adventures ignited a lifelong passion for wildlife conservation, a passion that eventually found its expression in the creation of the brand, whose name means 'freedom' in Swahili.
The result is a safari-inspired range, including the flagship Uhuru XO Caribbean Golden Rum, which directly supports environmental conservation. Ten percent of the brand's net sales are donated to Tusk, a charity dedicated to protecting African wildlife and preserving endangered species.
The brand's collaboration with Tusk ensures that every sip of Uhuru rum helps fund initiatives aimed at preserving Africa's rich biodiversity.
Uhuru XO Caribbean Golden Rum sells for £39.99 and is available from Master of Malt. For more about Uhuru and its conservation work, click here.
