I am taking a break from Deborah Kerbel's books. Although I have been reading quite a few. So, I will be reviewing more of her books in a bit.
But for now, I came across this wonderful book. It is also sad in places. But there is also a sense of courage and bravery about the story that takes the reader on a trip of a lifetime through some rough terrain not expected in a story.
This book is about Chris Dearing, a young boy who is perceptive and reflective. He is positive his family's long streak of bad luck is finally over. Sure, he's thought that before but this time he feels is very different.
He reclaimed his grandfather's land in the Yukon which is the land his granddad swore was full of gold. Now Chris just must wait until faither is out of prison so they can start mining their family fortune.
But things get complicated quickly. His dad's new business partners seem more like corks. Child Protective Services is getting in the way. And then Chris learns that his grandfather may not have been completely truthful about where his gold comes from. With his best friend by his side and an angry guard goose hot on his tail, Chris must find a wear to break the Dearing curse. Can he do it once and for all?
An interesting story with a twist for kids of all ages. There are mature themes in the book. But it is well done and well-written.
