Well it's already time again to talk about my Libro.fm ACL audiobooks for September and October. I really don't have too much to say in this intro, so we'll just jump into the books.
September
The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling
This was definitely the one I was most excited to see for September. I had a lot of fun reading The Ex Hex, which is the first book in this series, and I think this will be a fantastic one to listen to. The first one was pretty light and easy to read, so I think this'll be perfect for listening to with a cup of tea, maybe while I get some cross-stitching done. This one follows Gwyn, the cousin of Vivienne from book one, and sounds like it might be a little bit of an enemies-to-lovers situation. I won't lie that part of the reason I enjoy this series is because of the Welsh characters—my mum lived in Wales for a few years, so I grew up with a love for the country even though I've not yet been. I'm hoping to make some time to listen to this one this month!
Bindle Punk Bruja by Desideria Mesa
In theory, this should be a book I end up really enjoying—it's set in the 20s with a witchy element which are two things I love. But I've seen quite a few reviewers saying the same thing and mentioning that they felt disappointed by this book. I still want to give it a go because it might end up working for me, but it definitely made me a little hesitant at the same time. I've still got a few audiobooks that I'd like to get to ahead of this one, but if I get the chance to listen to this before the end of the year I definitely will. Of course, this is still relatively new as well so I'll be keeping my eye out for more reviews as they come in.
Marple: Twelve New Mysteries
I couldn't resist grabbing this one even though I know it might be ages before I get to it. While I'm a huge Agatha Christie fan, I've mostly be sticking to the Poirot books because I always found him more interesting than Marple. But this has got some intriguing authors in it, like Leigh Bardugo, Alyssa Cole and Lucy Foley, whom I'm all read and enjoyed before. So I think I'll probably end up holding off on this until I've read some more of the original Marple's. I knew I didn't want a physical copy of this so I'm glad I managed to nab it this way and that I wouldn't be rushed into reading it before I'm ready. If you're a Christie fan and you've read this already, I'd love to hear your thoughts as to whether this lived up to the originals or not.
October
Making A Scene by Constance Wu
So I did pick this one up on a complete whim. I don't really know anything about Constance Wu, but I really liked her in Crazy Rich Asians and that was enough for me. This one is getting mixed reviews so far, with a couple of people mentioning that as it's a memoir in essay form, it can seem a little scattered. Honestly, knowing that it's in essay form definitely bumps it up my list—I find personal essays much easier and more enjoyable to read than a straight up memoir so I'm hoping that I might enjoy that aspect. I think it'll take me a while to pick this one up, but I hope I end up enjoying it.
Partners in Crime by Alisha Rai
Obviously I had to pick up the only romance selection we had in October as well. I've actually never read any Alisha Rai before—I've mentioned before that I only really got into contemporary romance this year, so she's never been an author I've been overly interested in until recently. This one sounds like it's going to be an absolutely wild ride with a trip to Las Vegas, evading kidnapper and art thieves and a mystery all tied in. It honestly sounds like a fantastic one to listen to on audio and I hope that I end up enjoying it or that it convinces me to try out some other things by Alisha Rai.
Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng
Every month there's one pick that I'm especially excited to see, and for October it was definitely Our Missing Hearts. Even though she's out of my comfort zone, Celeste Ng is one of my favourite authors. She has an incredible way of writing stories and characters that are so compelling that you can't look away. I've been holding out for this all year so I grabbed it as soon as I saw it in the ACL picks this month. I was also extremely excited to see that it's read by Lucy Liu—I love her, I think she's absolutely fantastic as an actor, and I think she'll be a really incredible narrator as well. Suffice to say, this is definitely getting listened to this month!
