What I learned from this book: Don't trust people who don't have social media accounts.
Description of the book: No one even knew they were together. Now one of them is dead.
Ciara and Oliver meet in a supermarket queue in Dublin and start dating the same week COVID-19 reaches Irish shores.
When lockdown threatens to keep them apart, Oliver suggests they move in together. Ciara sees a unique opportunity for a relationship to flourish without the scrutiny of family and friends. Oliver sees a chance to hide who - and what - he really is.
TODAY
Detectives arrive at Oliver's apartment to discover a decomposing body inside. Can they determine what really happened, or has lockdown created an opportunity for someone to commit the perfect crime?
How this book made me feel: I read a sampler of this book and I was not impressed. I don't like books written about this pandemic because I think that people are trying to monetize this situation and it is wrong. I lived through it and don't want to read about it, however, I am glad to have read this book, the pandemic stuff is just a cover story for the true essence of this novel. I was very pleasantly surprised by it.
The protagonists in this book were Ciara and Oliver. Two ordinary people who met each other, liked each other and started dating, then the pandemic hits and Oliver decides to invite Ciara to live with him for two weeks during the lockdown. But they are not just two ordinary people, they do have their agendas for this relationship. We also get to see the process of the investigation after a very decomposed body has been found in the flat where Ciara and Oliver lived. Who is that person, and how that person ended up dead? The characters are sweet but at the same time very messed up. They are mysterious and I was dying to find out what will happen next.
The plot of this book is very jumpy, the timelines and the perspectives keep changing and it helped to avoid monotony, especially at the beginning, but at the same time, it has created a little bit of confusion. I really enjoyed the twists and turns in the story and the way the author drop-fed the reader with drops of information throughout the pages. The topics discussed in this book were family relationships, the justice system, life in constant fear, loneliness, secrets, looking for the truth, mistakes that you pay for the rest of your life and many more.
I think that the author is a great storyteller and knows how to deceive a reader in the best possible way. The massive turns and twists were unexpected and left me sitting there with a mouth wide open. :O
The book is set in Ireland during the lockdown, and it was interesting to read about their restrictions and how people behaved. The chapters have medium-length, and the book was a pretty quick and easy read. The ending was absolutely brilliant and I loved how the author concluded this story.
So, to conclude, even though I didn't have high hopes for this book, I was pleasantly surprised with this novel. The calmness is deceiving and the characters and the plot were very well delivered. If you pick this one up, don't DNF it, good things are coming.
I hope you will give it a go and will like it as much as I did.
Tank you for your time!
