Once in a while, we're faced with something that I don't think anybody could have seen coming. Whether it's a band completely changing their direction or an album from some band that hardly anybody has heard of, surprises of that caliber are what constantly keep the global metal underground interesting at virtually every turn so long as you're paying attention to what's going on and always digging for more. When I stumbled upon the new album from Caratucay tonight, I had no idea what I was in for after being drawn in by that interesting cover art. What awaited me was something that I never could have predicted with the end leaving me absolutely dumbfounded by the fact that more aren't clamoring at the very mention of the name of Caratucay.
I've already stated the simple truth that anything in the world of progressive and technical death metal has been utterly mind-bending in recent years, and I don't see myself stopping continuously saying that anytime soon no matter how repetitive it becomes because of how true it is to a magnificent extent. I'm not a stranger to new names popping up all over the place gaining plenty of attention, but with that always comes a number of names also new to the game but aren't getting the deserving levels of attention despite their material being utterly spectacular. Sadly, that seems to be the case with Caratucay who has just put out what has to be the biggest surprise in the world of progressive death metal that I've experienced since first hearing Devil's Reef two years ago. I say that's sad purely because should even a single track of what's been brought forth in any of the ten tracks of "Nocturnes of the Incarcerated" then I've no doubt the name of Caratucay will be on the lips of many in a matter of weeks if not days. The vast progressive prowess that can be witnessed at every point throughout this massive creation is damn near tear-jerking in certain moments as Caratucay are constantly and consistently putting their best foot forward to deliver a performance that is far more than mere cock of an eyebrow. Rather, "Nocturnes of the Incarcerated" beg the word "masterful" to come into play.
Should the band make the right moves and find themselves before the right opportunities, I don't see how they couldn't become one of the hottest new names in what it means to push death metal of this variety to its limit. Every aspect of this record is something to fawn over with every new listen offering a new sight to the glory that we weren't aware of before while it becomes clear with every new spin the exact kind of wonder that is brought before us. Without a doubt, "Nocturnes of the Incarcerated" cannot be considered anything less than a staggering delivery from Caratucay from top to bottom, side to side, and beginning to end.
