The Last Devil to Die by Richard Osman
Book 60 of 2023 (audiobook read by Fiona Shaw)
The Last Devil to Die is book four in the Thursday Murder Club series. I would say you don't need to have read the other books to get what is going on here, but you probably should, just to give you the required back story for our characters.
As with book 3 I decided to borrow this on audiobook from the library. It is once again read by Fiona Shaw - those who listened to the first two books don't seem to happy about that but I think she does a great job at narrating.
There is plenty going on here as the gang get embroiled in yet another murder mystery. The cops have nothing to go on, but when Elizabeth and co find out that the victim is someone they know, they decide to put their skills to good use.
There are a couple of stories going on here aside from the main plot, and the author does pull on the heart strings more this time around, but all the same humour and antics are still here to make up for those more difficult to read sections.
While I do think this is a solid story over all, for me it goes back to one or two issues that I had with these books since the initial novel. First and foremost I thought it was overly long, and there was a bit too much going on as a whole. To me it felt like it could have finished a bit quicker without some sections that felt a bit irrelevant come book the books ending. At just over 10 hours listening time I was definitely "done" when the book ended.
Overall, an enjoyable listen, and fans of the series should be happy. There is nothing here to change the minds of people who might be "on the fence" about the books as a whole.
