A new name in the world of atmospheric black metal is hardly anything to get excited about since it's a constant event on such a scale that it's impossible for any of us to keep up with at any given time, but it's when we're given a truly exceptional act that does their craft well right out of the gate that the scene really starts clamoring. You never know when it's going to happen, but you're sure to hear at least some rumblings about such a creation purely by word of mouth. That's precisely how I came upon Domhain's debut effort with all that it has to offer, and it's certainly a creation that many of us are constantly on the lookout for.
Three tracks can easily be very little to get excited about, but across an overall runtime of just over twenty-eight minutes, how can one not be curious how a new band manages to fill that space. In the case of what Domhain has summoned forth for "Nimue", the answer is quite simple: with real magic of a truly ancient vein. Channeling some of the long-told myths of their Irish lands whose landscape still holds quite a bit of that old world mysticism if you look for it, Domhain's long-form metal of a truly ethereal nature is already done impeccably despite this being the first piece these musicians have crafted together with all of their collected experience in many other names surely doing wonders to really make this EP the best that it can possibly be. As melodic and atmospheric in as many instances as aggressive and sad over the withering of the spirits that dwell in the lakes, the forests, and the mountains, "Nimue" has so much character and quality in every given minute that one cannot help but be rooted in place with Domhain making it clear time and time again that this is not a debut to easily shake off. Whatever experience the musicians behind Domhain used to bring this creation to life cannot be given enough credit for all that's accomplished in these three tracks with the majesty "Nimue" nothing that is easy to forget or remove yourself from.
Given all the many different projects that the people behind Domhain are part of, it wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't a good number of years before we hear more from this fresh and invigorating act, yet it will be completely worth it. If "Nimue" is just the starting point then I shudder to think what else Domhain is able to summon forth from the ancient world.
