Deadly Carnage – Endless Blue

For every year that we see throughout the vast expanse of the underground, there are always a few records that come around that are able to just defy virtually every expectation to deliver an experience that none of us could have anticipated. It can come from anywhere within the spectrum of metal with it oftentimes being the most unexpected of places that we see a name rise from the depths to deliver something that we can really latch onto. By all accounts, I don't think many of us could have seen Deadly Carnage coming with what they've brought forth for their fifth full-length album with plenty rightfully dubbing it as one of the year's best.

The Japanese culture has found its influence in many different corners of the world as we know it, and metal is by no means an exception to that with there being loads of bands taking more than a few cues from the ancient myths to modern pop culture to take inspiration from for their own material. Some only use it for superficial flair, but others like Deadly Carnage have taken the concept to tremendous lengths to provide us with experiences like "Endless Blue" that embody the very best of what can be done with that particular folklore when combined with passion and immense talent. From top to bottom, "Endless Blue" cannot be seen as anything other than astonishingly gorgeous. A fantastic display of post-metal that is more than comfortable flirting with notions from black metal and doom, Deadly Carnage comes upon us like the most magnificent tsunami that dives into the deep connections between Japanese lore and the ever-shifting depths of the ocean where demons and spirits are constantly entwined. Through a carefully calculated sound that is as free as the seas themselves, "Endless Blue" is a true wonder to behold as Deadly Carnage perfectly approaches the material with the kind of focus that can only be born out of extreme passion. Each track cannot be likened to another. Deadly Carnage goes out of its way constantly to lift the listener up into their own version of "Ukiyo-e" ("images of the floating world") that is simply intoxicating to behold. I've come across very few experiences throughout the world of metal that's able to do as much justice for the ever-popular Japanese folklore, and Deadly Carnage stands tall above virtually all of them.

Works like this are well and truly few and far between. What Deadly Carnage has brought forth here has only brought immense acclaim yet again to the world of post-metal with their particular approach unable to be compared one-to-one with incredibly few other creations out there even in the dense, ever-expanding underground. "Endless Blue" is deserving of whatever accolades are thrown its way with all who come before the work in for an intoxicating journey the likes of which you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.
