At any given time, there are a few dozen rising names in any particular vein throughout the vast underground that are more than worth taking a look into for what they've accomplished in the past. Be it black, death, doom, thrash, or some metal in between, an act with real promise is not something people are wont to let go of when its discovered. When they came around with their debut album four years ago, Eternal Storm really blew away with their overwhelming performance that brought forth more than a few progressive elements to their brand of melodic death metal. Many of us knew that Eternal Storm was destined for greatness with time being the last great seasoning such an exquisite dish needed to become something else to behold in every regard. The time has come for such an experience to be unveiled, and it is far more than what I think many were already hoping for.
Clocking in just shy of a 70-minute runtime, Eternal Storm was clearly not messing about when they sat down to pen something that would become a worthy successor and advancement from what they achieved within "Come the Tide" four years ago. With everything that they've brought to the table for "A Giant Bound to Fall", it should be no less than obvious that Eternal Storm spent its time extremely well with this record not just being a wild upgrade in any given aspect from its predecessor, but it sets the bar for this kind of death metal really high for 2024 already. Heavily laden with a progressive approach that enhances the stunning melody of intense emotions that Eternal Storm expertly wields, "A Giant Bound to Fall" is a terrifically layered experience that cannot be explored fully in so much as five spins let alone one. Each track has enough strength and technical prowess to stand tall all on its own with the album as a whole coming together as an utterly titanic performance that proves Eternal Storm is pound for pound one of the most engaging and interesting rising acts in the entirety of melodic death metal today. There's so much jam-packed into this record that I still find myself at difficulty trying to put it into words even after losing myself in the ebbs and flows for hours on end with "A Giant Bound to Fall" something that I don't think words can ever truly encapsulate and do real justice for. Without doubt, this is a creation that needs to be heard to be believed.
It is with the start of every new year that people are looking for those first big releases to really grab our attention from the onset to really show us that the underground is always more than ready to start a new year off on the best foot possible. There are maybe but a handful of such creations already announced for 2024, and Eternal Storm simply must be among them. All that they've accomplished and all that they've done has reached new heights for this staggering performance that is an absolute beauty to look upon. With all that it dares to be, "A Giant Bound to Fall" is purely and simply one thing above all else: awe-inspiring.
